Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Athletics, Recreation and Student Life Coordinator, the Sport and Recreation Specialist is integral to the delivery of a variety of informal and formal individual and group sport, athletic, health, and recreational programs to support the physical, social, and mental wellbeing of students. The position requires an individual with a high level of creativity, attention to detail, and time management skills. The Sport and Recreation Specialist will have proven experience in developing plans and processes to ensure proficient execution of programming, activities, and operations within scope.

Education and Experience:

Graduation from a two-year Recreation or Sport Management program or equivalent is required. Must be registered with the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association or equivalent in weight training; personal training and group fitness is an asset. Must have Standard First Aid and CPR, level C. A minimum of 4-6 years related experience in sport and recreation program planning is required. Previous supervisory experience is an asset.

Functions and Duties:

1. Assists with or is assigned responsibility for the development, planning, coordination, promotion, delivery, and/or evaluation of informal and formal individual and group sport and recreational programs including but not limited to athletics, intramural sports, group fitness, recreational excursions, drop-in activities, and health and wellness programs and events.

2. Prepares and recommends budgets, including service contract requirements, for assigned events and activities. Reports out on actual revenue and expenses as required. Works within budgetary constraints and ensures all financial information and invoices are processed in a timely and accurate manner.

3. Liaises with department staff, community organizations, and other agencies to offer specialized programs, workshops and excursions; promotes community development through liaison with community groups.

4. Assists with recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of student employees. Supports the professional growth and development of student employees.

5. Provides logistical support for activities and events including but not limited to coordinating venue bookings, supplies, and training materials, and liaising with campus partners as needed.

6. Assists with the coordination and delivery of peer support programming, including but not limited to budgeting, marketing and promotion, staffing, engaging with students, and organizing supplies and resources.

7. Assists with the operationalization of sport, recreation, and health facilities. Monitors proper use and care of equipment and facilities. Determines the general layout of fitness equipment and storage areas. Inspects facilities daily for cleanliness and safety and assists with coordinating daily/weekly cleaning schedules.

8. Recommends, implements, and maintains awareness of safety measures for employees, students, and volunteers using relevant facilities or participating in relevant programming, including screening participants to ensure their readiness to be physically active as needed. Provides fitness facility and weight room orientations as needed. Maintains and monitors First Aid supplies for facilities and programs withing scope. Acts as a First Aid responder for relevant facilities. Assists with monitoring physical access to relevant facilities.

9. Collects and tracks fees for relevant programming as needed. Sets up fee payment system to ensure accurate registration and collection of fees.

10. Assists with records management. Compiles data and other relevant information and prepares reports as required.

11. Responds to inquiries about Athletics, Recreation and Student Life programming and activities.

12. Maintains Athletics, Recreation and Student Life web pages and coordinates the creation of new pages

13. Represents the Athletics, Recreation and Student Life department on various college committees

14. Performs other duties as required

Skills and Abilities:

- Possesses an intermediate working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Strategic and tactical planning skills, coupled with excellent organization skills demonstrated through ability to prioritize multiple and changing demands
- Must have excellent organizational skills, including solid planning, coordination, and follow-up skills
Physical Demands
- ability to bend and lift up to 60 lbs of free weights
- ability to bend, turn and lift weight benches and other equipment
- ability to walk, run, bike on all cardio equipment to check proper functionality
- ability to lift, turn, pull, push equipment & machines to check proper functionality and to organize layout
- ability to assist in the set-up and teardown of equipment for events
- ability to lead and participate in all types of sports and recreational activities including hiking, kayaking, biking etc.

Appointment Type:
Support - Regular Full-time

Appointment Start Date:

Monday-Friday, 35 hours per week.
Some evening and weekend work may be required.
Some travel may be required.

Annual Salary/Hourly Rate:
$48,804 - $55,787
