Museum Assistant

The Kelowna Museums Society is looking to fill the full time position of Museum Assistant. The purpose of this role is to engage visitors with the mission of KMS. The Museum Assistant has a diverse role, which includes visitor services, event support, retail, administration, curatorial services, and education. The Museum Assistant assists the venue rental team, education/programming team, curatorial team, and maintenance team as needed. The Museum Assistant may work in one or more KMS venues, according to organizational priorities.

Primary Duties
• Welcomes guests to Kelowna Museums, and orients them to the museums, gift shop, events, venue rental, and tourist information, in accordance with the purpose of their visit.
• Learns about and engages museum visitors with the human and natural history of Kelowna, through interactive experiences, gallery orientation, fascinating facts, anecdotes, etc.
• Supports the Laurel Enterprise Coordinator in whatever capacity is required. This includes offering enthusiastic and detailed response to rental inquiries, rental administration, and event support. This includes venue set up/take down from time to time.
• Conducts gift shop sales and undertakes gift shop duties as required.
• Helps with museum events and educational programs from time to time.
• Provides assistance with display installation and care, under direction of the Curatorial Manager.
• Stays abreast of tourist information relating to local heritage and agro tourism.
• Be prepared to support the maintenance team as needed.

Secondary Duties
• Apprise Digital Media Coordinator of relevant and interesting content.
• Collect and compile accurate statistics regarding visitation
• Promotes a positive team atmosphere
• Maintains acceptable appearance and conduct standards
• This position by definition is highly variable, and the Museum Assistant should be prepared for a wide diversity of tasks in response to KMS priorities.

• Minimum requirement of post-secondary training in related field.
• One year of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
• Curiosity about local history, including that wine and orchard industries.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Exemplary time management and organizational skills.
• Genuinely enjoys talking with people about Okanagan history, fruit, wine, food, and artisans.
• Creative and curious.
• Food Safe and Serve it Right certified.

Salary: $16.36 per hour to start
