Mating Disruption Crew Members

Okanagan-Kootenay Sterile Insect Release Program

Position: Mating Disruption Crew Members
Status: Full-time/Temporary (approximately 4 week term)
Location: Penticton, BC
Hourly Wage: $15.00

About Us:

We are an environmentally-friendly control Program for one of the biggest pests of apple and pear trees—the codling moth. Since the Program started more than 20 years ago, the amount of pesticides used in the valley against codling moth has dropped by 96%. Our Program breeds and sterilizes codling moths at our state-of-the-art facility in Osoyoos, and we release them into orchards where they mate with wild moths to prevent the population from reproducing. Our Program also provides trapping and monitoring, education, and enforcement services for the growers.

We require many seasonal employees throughout the valley to help us deliver our services. Employment with SIR offers a chance to make a difference for our farmers and our environment.

About the Position:

Mating disruption is an environmentally friendly pest management technique designed to control certain insect pests, by distributing artificial pheromones that confuse the individual pests and disrupt mating, therefore blocking the reproductive cycle. Our Mating Disruption Crew Members will hang mating disruption (tube dispensers) throughout orchards in the Penticton area. Our Mating Disruption Crew member positions are full-time 8am to 4pm for a temporary term, approximately four weeks, beginning at the end of March. Opportunities to continue for an extended term may be available.

About You:

You are comfortable working outside. You have a Class 5 Driver’s licence, a clean driver’s abstract, and your own vehicle. You enjoy working as part of a team and are able to do physically demanding work (hiking, reaching, bending) conducted in all weather conditions.

Please apply by March 18th.

To apply, please submit your resume to [email protected] with "Mating Disruption Crew Member" in the subject line.
