Condo development in works

McGuire Lake Park could be the backdrop of a new condominium development—if city council votes to support a zoning amendment application necessary for the buildings to rise.
The Salmon Arm planning and development services committee voted Monday to recommend a zoning amendment application to city council for approval. The zoning change would allow for a new condo development near McGuire Lake.
During its meeting, the committee was presented with a request to change the zoning for three properties located at 631, 651 and 671 Eighth Ave. NE from R-10 residential to R-5 high density residential.
McGuire Manor Ltd. is the named owner of the properties, and Salmon Arm developer Bill Laird is acting as the agent.
“The goal right now is to find a developer who would build condominiums,” Laird told the committee. “We believe this site is better suited to long-term living arrangements.”
Laird provided limited details about future plans for the condominiums as the project will require the rezoning application to be successful in order to move forward.
The staff report about the application noted the location was well suited for higher density given its access to transportation routes, parks and community services.
Salmon Arm council members spoke up in support of the move to higher density housing.
“It looks like there couldn’t be a much better place to go higher density with this location, walkability, proximity to downtown,” Coun. Kevin Flynn said. “I’m really excited to see what comes forward in the future if this is approved.”
Coun. Tim Lavery was also supportive of the project.
“This is the right approach in the right area,” he said.
“That’s a good spot for high density living,” Coun. Sylvia Lindgren said. “I can see why it’d be desirable for people to buy them, though renters would be very lucky to live there.”
The motion to recommend the zoning amendment application to Salmon Arm city council was passed unanimously.
