North Okanagan Hospice Society has a new executive director.

Starting in September, Megan Cox will lead the Vernon non-profit, taking over from Lisa Matthews, who will be leaving in mid- to late-October to pursue new opportunities.

Cox, a registered nurse, brings more than 13 years of nursing and leadership experience to NOHS.

She holds a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of British Columbia and a master’s of nursing with a focus on leadership from Athabasca University.

Throughout her career, Cox has been engaged in various clinical settings, “consistently demonstrating a commitment to transforming health-care environments into spaces of healing and trust.”

“Megan is a steadfast advocate for patients and their families, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs prioritized. Her expertise in health-care operations, business planning, strategic planning and quality improvement—across settings—will be instrumental in advancing NOHS’ mission to provide exceptional palliative care in the North Okanagan,” the NOHS said a news release.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to Lisa Matthews, whose leadership has been pivotal in the development of our strategic planning process and the launch of our Hospice at Home initiatives, among other accomplishments. Lisa will work closely with Megan during the transition, ensuring a seamless handover of responsibilities and continuity of leadership as our organization continues to grow.”

NOHS is a registered charity that operates a 12-bed palliative care facility in Vernon for residents of the North Okanagan. NOHS was incorporated in 1984 in Vernon as a charitable organization to relieve suffering and improve quality of life through skilled and compassionate care to those with a palliative diagnosis along with support for their loved ones and the bereaved.
