Ashley didn’t think much of it.

Her daughter was starting to act a little more disconnected. She was struggling with making new friends at Okanagan Mission Secondary, having just moved here from Winnipeg. It was little things at first, like not looking up from her phone at breakfast, to staying in her room all night when the family was all downstairs.

She just thought it was a “phase” and it would turn a corner at one point.

Besides, she was dealing with some joint pain from her new rigorous job, which had her on her feet most of the day.

Days turned into weeks, and Ashley was starting to get more concerned with the lack of interaction with her daughter. She asked her husband if he was concerned at all, and he shrugged it off as just a “phase.” Nothing to be worried about.

Around this time a package arrived.

A big package, on a crane.

It was their new hot tub. They had ordered it months ago and, as Ashley put it, “We kind of forgot about it.”

Around 7 p.m. on most weekday nights the family started to converge in their new Beachcomber Hot Tub, enjoying the warmth and how their muscles felt afterwards. But something else happened. Something unexpected.

“She started to share,” Ashley says.

Being a hot tub, her daughter didn’t feel good about heading in the water with her phone, so all encumbrances for conversation melted away.

Ashley says it’s funny how a smaller space, with bubbles, jets and being outdoors was the best solution for building new bridges with her daughter.

She says it just started happening organically, and she doesn’t know of anywhere else in the house where that amount of sharing would occur naturally.

On top of the newfound dialogue, Ashley says she also noticed more spring in her step at work.

“ I bounced back quicker from a longer shift, and I started to look forward to 7 p.m.,” she says. “It was my treat for myself.”

She says there is an added benefit of the hot tub with her husband, which happens when she is feeling especially worn out.

“He rubs my feet in the tub, and I adore him for it,” she says with a smile.
