A Stop, Drop and Donate fundraiser for the North Okanagan Hospice Society reeled in $27,000 over the weekend.

Boosted by a $20,000 contribution from Community Roofing Ltd. in response to a call for donations—from cash to everyday household needs all the way up to a new roof—the event was a “heartwarming” success, the society says.

The original six-bed facility was constructed in 2001 with an expansion and renovation to 12 beds in 2008.

The home is in need of several upgrades to ensure it is current with health and safety standards.

Community Roofing donated $20,000 in labour toward an estimated roof replacement cost of $45,000.

“We decided to do this because we have had family members and roofers through hospice, just people we know and the good care they took of them,” owner Ray Skelton said.

Other donations ranged from $5 to $3,000, along with items for the household, like a new slow cooker, several cartons of Boost, juice, washcloths and numerous other items.

“It was heartwarming to see the community show up and donate what they could. We heard many personal stories that connected people to hospice,” executive director Lisa Matthews said. “We are especially thankful for the remarkable donation from Community Roofing.”

Founded in 1984, NOHS operates a 12-bed, end-of-life palliative facility, provides respite care, grief and bereavement counselling to more than 1,000 individuals annually.
