Regional District of Central Okanagan has been honoured for its flood prevention work.

The regional district recently received a community excellence award for environmental sustainability from Southern Interior Local Government Association.

RDCO won the honour for its role in developing a regional flood mitigation strategy as part of the ongoing floodplain management plan. District officials have been working with area governments, First Nations and regional partners.

“Local governments across the province have seen firsthand the wicked effects of natural disasters, from flooding to fires,” RDCO chair Loyal Wooldridge said in a press release. “The last year has been a testament to the power of nature and climate change. The regional floodplain management plan and resource guide is a demonstration of collaboration in action.”

RDCO received the award at the recent SILGA conference in Salmon Arm.
