Let’s get ready to rummmmmmmble!

And by rumble we mean pay a visit to Road 13 Vineyards in Oliver, where you will decide which wine is a knockout during the Heavyweight Whites Champion Experience.

Now, you may think you are not a white wine drinker, but Road 13 winemaker Barclay Robinson believes you will be pleasantly surprised by some of the contenders he has been “training” in his vineyard, which is 100% organic as of the 2021 vintage.

“Road 13 is known for full-bodied red wines, but the whites tend to get lost when people just focus on the reds,” Robinson says. “What we also found was that a lot of people who enjoyed syrah and the big (cabernets) tended to like our viognier, the Rhone whites and also the chardonnay. They’re more of a full-bodied white wine and not what a lot of people envision for a white wine.

“The viognier base, or the Rhone varieties, tend to give you a really nice tropical note and a nice acidity. But because they’re barrel aged for five months, which isn’t a long time, it just really supports the fruit, and it really gives you a nice weight to the mid-palate, which is why we call them heavyweights.”

And that is why Robinson is ready to put his whites in a title bout with the intimidating reds. For just $15, you and your wine-drinking partner or friends can sit down and go toe to toe with the whites and the reds for an hour during the Heavyweight Whites Champion Experience.

Take a seat, enjoy the southern hospitality Road 13 is known for and savour the tete-a-tete between whites (Lights Out) Marsanne, (The Golden Boy) Viognier and (Jackpot Babyface) Chardonnay, and reds (Return To Sender) Cab Sauv and (Double Trouble) Syrah.

Another reason why Robinson is excited about the Heavyweight experience is because the white wines pair well with what is on the menu these days. They go beautifully with hardier stews, roast chickens, pork tenderloin and even some grilled red meats. You will learn the perfect pairings during the experience.

“Being able to taste it and then also having some suggestions for wine and food pairings at the winery really helps them get a great experience, and they will learn about the wines as well,” Robinson says.

Road 13 is open Thursday through Monday. Wine is sold from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., while the experiences happen from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Heavyweight Whites Champion Experience and others can be booked here.
