Anita Courtney spent 30 years as a nurse, so she knows what it takes to care for people.

When she suffered a stroke and was no longer able to perform routine, daily tasks, Courtney ultimately made the decision to move out of her home. She chose Kelowna’s Orchard Gardens Seniors Community, which is part of the VRS Communities network, and she could not be happier with her decision.

“Like many seniors, I was extremely reluctant to exchange the independent life I had for one that would now be spent in what a common stigma refers to as a ‘home’ for the elderly,” Courtney says.

Anita Courtney is loving Orchard Gardens.

“With a healthy amount of persuasion from my children, I am grateful to have found my place in a community that is indeed a home, but it has become my home in every wonderful sense of the word.”

Courtney has lived at Orchard Gardens for more than two years, which means much of her time there has been during the COVID-19 pandemic. She says the implementation of the pandemic rules could not have made her feel more safe, but she was most impressed with how the staff makes life feel completely normal at times.

Courtney says she has made numerous “human connections” during her two years at Orchard Gardens, and she urges anyone who is on the fence about moving into a seniors’ community to make a leap they will not regret.

“Do not wait too long,” Courtney says.

VRS Communities Society is a non-profit organization with a 50-year reputation of providing inclusive services and housing. Orchard Gardens features 81 studio and 105 one-bedroom private-pay independent living suites.

The surroundings are right there in the name, too, as stunning gardens are located throughout the property.
