Want to volunteer and be part of the Granfondo Axel Merckx and Subaru Ironman this summer in Penticton?

The Granfondo is scheduled for Sept. 19, 2021, and needs 400 volunteers to support up to 2,300 cyclists in the event. Ironman Canada is scheduled a week later, on Sept. 26, 2021, and needs to recruit 2,000 volunteers to support the athletes expected to participate.

“Penticton is renowned for our support of these global events,” City of Penticton general manager of community services Anthony Haddad said.

“We’re working hard to build on the tradition of these events in Penticton and hope to revive the support of our volunteers.”

The city is hosting Pedal Penticton on Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. to noon in Gyro Park as part of the opening of the first sections of the Lake-to-Lake Bike Route.

The event will feature a group ride on the route and a community expo with e-bike demos, children’s mountain bike obstacle course, trishaw rides, swag bags for the first 100 riders and much more to raise awareness of the route and to get the community involved in cycling.

Information about volunteer opportunities and sign-up sheets for Granfondo and Ironman Canada will be provided at the city’s tent at the event.

“Some of my fondest memories involve seeing our community come together to host these important events. Our volunteers have the skills and experience to make these events successful,” Penticton Mayor John Vassilaki said.

“I encourage the army of volunteers to dust off their T-shirts, come down to Pedal Penticton and sign-up to support these events and Penticton’s economic recovery.”
