A longtime downtown Vernon business will close the doors forever at the end of August.

Tom Smith, owner of Furniture Emporium, is retiring.

The business has been in the same spot at the corner of 34th Street and 31st Avenue since 1963.

Smith’s father started the family business and built the building himself.

Smith and his brothers grew up in the building, and Tom never left.

He took over in 1997 and his own children have also spent years working and helping out.

“Bitter sweet day, but it’s time,” the business posted on its Facebook page.

The building has been sold, and all stock is being liquidated.

Progression Muscle, Bone and Joint clinic will take over the space.
