The District of Summerland is leading the way when it comes to energy efficiency.

The district was recently on the receiving end of an Efficiency in Action Award from FortisBC for completing detailed energy audits on all 12 of its major municipal buildings, replacing heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment with high-efficiency and heat pump options.

It also upgraded all standard streetlights and arena lights to LEDs, and it installed a water treatment for the arena that eliminated the need for hot water when building and resurfacing ice.

When all is said and done, the district expects to save $80,000 per year thanks to the upgrades.

“We are thrilled to have received this recognition of our community’s commitment to reducing energy use in our buildings,” acting mayor Doug Holmes said in a press release. “Council’s six strategic priorities include infrastructure investment, good governance and community resilience, and this award shows that we’re making progress on each of those.

“Saving energy means saving our taxpayers money, and reducing our environmental impact is something we know our community is passionate about.”
