A man with a passion for geology has turned that into a rock-solid foundation for students studying the subject at Okanagan College and UBC Okanagan.

Murray Roed, who has authored and co-authored five geology books about the Okanagan, has now donated more than $100,000 to local students through the sales of those publications.

Roed and the books’ other contributors have donated 100% of the proceeds from the five books to the two schools, and their latest contribution of $5,000 pushed the total into six digits.

“We’re all quite proud of how this turned out,” Roed said in a press release. “We wanted to share our knowledge of this valley with residents and in doing so help future students entering the field with their studies.

“It’s worth celebrating what we’ve achieved. There are many contributors to these books, and we’re really proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish together.”

Roed’s first book, Origin of the Okanagan Valley, was published in 1995, and four more books have followed.

Student Taylor Cornett is one of the beneficiaries of the fund, receiving the Kelowna Geology Award nearly three years ago.

“I have Dr. Roed’s books on my bookshelf and I use them as a reference guide in my work,” Cornett said. “To meet him was very humbling, and the award helped pay for my education.”
