Continuing studies courses at Okanagan College cover a wide variety of careers.

There are even two nursing programs for people to advance their skills, including the perianesthesia nursing certificate course. Perianesthesia nurses provide care to patients undergoing or recovering from anesthesia.

Kayley Herman is one nurse who took the OC course, and she received funding through Interior Health to complete the training. She worked as a PAR nurse in Saskatchewan before moving to B.C. and upgrading her training while also having a baby.

“My journey with the training was unique because I completed the theory portion of the course while I was pregnant and on maternity leave,” Herman said in a press release. “After maternity leave, I was able to complete the practicum portion of the course. Completing the program in its entirety has been rewarding for me.”

Herman now works in the operating room at Vernon Jubilee Hospital.

“Juggling family and work schedules with education can be a challenge,” Okanagan College PAR instructor Karen Yakashiro said. “Getting to know students like Kayley as they work to find balance and achieve their educational goals is one of the aspects of my role that is most rewarding.

“Kayley’s hard work has paid off, and I’m proud of her efforts, as well as all of the other OC students and alumni who are making a difference and working on the front lines of health care right now.”

Okanagan College’s continuing courses includes offerings in business, health, education, technology, cannabis, wine and food and other in-demand fields. More information can be found here.
