The B.C. hotel industry is doing what it can to keep its members in business as the increase of B.C.’s COVID-19 cases creates further restrictions.

Provincial health minister Dr. Bonnie Henry released a revised public health order in the wake of the latest outbreak, and it mandated that only two events can be held per day on the same premises. That has an impact on the hotel industry.

“We recognize the implications that this mandate will have on many of you, as day meetings are one of the few opportunities still available to our industry, and have addressed these concerns with government,” BC Hotel Association board chair Bryan Pilbeam said in a letter to members on Friday. “While our aim has always been to protect the safety of guests, employees and communities, we remain conscious of introducing safety measures that align with industry operations and continue to advocate for this on your behalf.”

Pilbeam, who is the Delta Hotels by Marriott Kamloops vice-president and general manager, also pointed out that the BCHA has been working with the government and WorkSafeBC to implement proper safety protocols, but the same can’t be said about short-term rentals and vacation properties.

“We are in continued discussion on what these new provisions will mean for our accommodation sector at large while continuing to highlight that our industry is well-equipped to continue safely welcoming guests,” Pilbeam said.
