The Wilden neighbourhood will likely be getting one step closer to a new elementary school when Kelowna city council meets on Monday.

City staff is recommending that council amend its official community plan to create the minimum of six acres that are required for an elementary school in the Central Okanagan Public Schools district. It is also recommending a rezoning change.

The site of the proposed school is 2025 Begbie Rd., and the B.C. Ministry of Education in March gave the district approval to purchase the required land.

The area’s existing OCP designation is MRL, or multiple unit residential, and it needs to be changed to EDINST, or educational/major institutional.

The school has been in the works from quite some time as the Wilden neighbourhood has grown, but previous changes to the OCP and zoning missed the six-acre requirement for schools.
