Kelowna tech start-up Minga is ready to deliver virtual school and classroom solutions to districts across North America—for free—in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The vision at Minga has always been to streamline and improve digital communication within our schools between educators, students and parents,” Minga founder and CEO Jason Richards said. “Minga lets teachers quickly and easily create a virtual classroom to connect and engage with their students and is a safe way for them to collaborate together.”

Minga launched its MingaSchool product just over a year ago, and it has steadily grown their customer base across Canada and the U.S. However, with lockdowns happening everywhere and the uncertain future of classrooms in the coming months, administrators are now scrambling to find effective ways to finish the school year. As a result, there is a huge surge in interest in the services Minga supplies.

“We have a lot of entire schools signing up right now,” Richards said. “We’ve made Minga 100 per cent free to educators for the remainder of the school year so there are no budget concerns for schools to sign up. We want to help however we can with the current situation.”

Minga combines the messaging and notifications of technologies like email and text messaging with the collaboration and sharing of social media, and adds the security and privacy that schools need to ensure the safety of our students, parents and teachers. It also lets teachers and coaches create groups to keep their classes and teams organized.

Ron Pearson, an administrator at Centennial High School in California, launched Minga at his school this year and says the technology has been invaluable.

“What makes Minga most valuable for us at this time is how easy it is to get messages and last minute updates to all our students and parents because things are changing at a rapid pace,” he said.
