An Alberta liquor store chain is proposing to set up shop in Kelowna.

Representatives for Wine and Beyond have made a formal application to the city for a development permit for a portion of property in the Dilworth Centre Mall.

The application is asking that 16,700 square feet at the north end of what will soon be a FreshCo grocery store, be rezoned to allow the liquor outlet to operate.

It would replace a much smaller Liquor Depot at the south end of the mall.

“The subject relocation will allow the shopping centre to respond to current market demands, and provide expanded services to the community,” the company said in its application.

To accommodate the building, two parking spaces along the east end of the mall would be eliminated.

According to the application, Wine and Beyond would take over about 30% of the floor space from the former Safeway store, which is being renovated into the discount grocery store brand FreshCo.
