More people getting thrifty

With people becoming more environmentally conscious, thrift stores are becoming increasingly popular. Their ‘recycling’ method of retail is attractive to those looking to shop more environmentally friendly, and you can find some hidden gems for a good price.

“The fact that we have older stuff plus the environmental benefits is great considering the trend of people liking ‘vintage’ clothes is popular,” said Ryan Colter, the manager of the Kindale thrift stores. “We also have a sustainable business method; whatever we don’t sell we donate away, so we throw as little as possible out.”

Everyone seems to be shopping at thrift stores now, from students to seniors. So it must be cool if the kids are doing it, right?

“We get lots of students from the college,” Colter said. “They like the vintage clothes we have, plus they can get an outfit here for like $15, so it’s easy on their wallets.”

Clothes aren’t the only items that thrift stores sell. Kindale and many other places sell things like dishes, electronics, furniture and books, so you can shop environmentally friendly for a wide variety of products.

Kindale has locations in Vernon, Salmon Arm and Armstrong, and Colter said they are always looking for donated items and volunteers to run the store.
