Okanagan College will focus on women when it conducts its annual career fair next month in Kelowna.

The college wants to increase the number of females who take up engineering, technology and technician occupations, so it will introduce a new presentation at its 38th annual career fair on Sunday, Nov. 3.

The new presentation is part of Advancing Women in Engineering and Technology, a Sector Labour Market Partnerships project funded by the province of B.C. and Government of Canada.

“It is important to encourage and support women to pursue careers in engineering and applied science professions,” Association of Consulting Engineering Companies British Columbia project leader Marcie Cochrane said in a press release. “When we include women, there are numerous benefits, including increased innovation, improved problem solving, stronger employee engagement and an enhanced sense of belonging for everyone, not just women.”

Cochrane will deliver the hour-long presentation that is targeted to both female and male, current and prospective college students and will provide insights on engineering career opportunities in B.C.

As for the rest of the career fair, more than 50 employers from B.C. and beyond will be in attendance to chat with young people who have questions about their upcoming careers.

Once again, the career fair will feature post-secondary preparatory seminars, tours, activities, program information and draw prizes. In addition, students who attend the workshops can have their photos professionally taken for their LinkedIn profiles on a first-come, first-served basis.

There will also be a resume-writing workshop.

The career fair will take place between 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Okanagan College’s Kelowna campus.
