UBC Okanagan and Okanagan College have joined forces to establish the Green Construction Research and Training Centre.

The centre will generate and expand knowledge in the areas of green construction, including materials, structural components and systems, and construction management.

UBCO School of Engineering professor Shahria Alam and Okanagan College Sustainable Construction Management Technology program’s Ashley Lubyk will oversee the centre.

“Our goal is to create a hub where innovation in green construction is fostered,” Alam said in a press release. “We are already starting to develop shared capstone projects for our students and establishing a speaker series that focuses on green construction and smart energy use.”

Alam, who has been published on the topic of green construction more than 200 times, believes the centre is important to grow the sector in the Okanagan, and it could have even a national or international impact.

“This joint initiative with Okanagan College will equip our students and researchers with the tools necessary to continue to innovate in the areas of green construction with a focus on sustainability,” Alam said.

The centre’s goal will be to develop “transformative, paradigm-changing research” that will help the construction industry.
