Kelowna’s Summerhill Pyramid Winery has become the first of its kind in Canada to be accredited as a Certified B Corporation.

Certified B Corporations are businesses that balances purpose and profit. B Corporation businesses are ones deemed to have made a positive global impact by working to reduce inequality, lower levels of poverty, create a healthier environment, build strong communities and offer high-quality jobs.

Summerhill is the first winery in Canada and one of only 26 around the world to gain B Corporation certification. It was assessed in categories including governance, workers, customers, community and the environment.

“My parents started working with Summerhill Pyramid’s organic certifier all the way back in 1988,” Summerhill CEO Ezra Cipes said in a press release. “Organic certification is important because it provides transparency for the way we farm and make our wine.”

Summerhill bills itself as Canada’s most visited winery.

Other B.C. companies that have achieved this certification include Hootsuite, Nada and Pyrrha Handcrafted Jewels.
