Staff with the City of Penticton is recommending council support seven more retail cannabis storefronts, which would bring the total approved so far in the city to 11, including six downtown.

City council voted last month to do away with its previous system of buffer zones that limited the proximity of shops from one another in favour of a city-wide cap of 14, including seven downtown.

Seven additional shops are being brought before council next week, all with the support of city staff.

  • 101 – 437 Martin St. (Green Essence)
  • 465 Main St. (Greenery Cannabis Boutique)
  • 101 – 130 Nanaimo Ave. W (Bluewater Cannabis)
  • 101 – 94 Ellis St. (Green Light Cannabis)
  • 103 – 2050 Main St. (Zen Canna)
  • 103 – 3502 Skaha Lake Rd. (Southside Cannabis Market)
  • 104 – 1652 Fairview Rd. (Fairview Cannabis Corner)

The stores include the four shops that were originally rejected by staff under the old system because they were in conflict with a higher-scoring store in close proximity to them.

In addition to the four already approved by council, there are two more proposed shops working their way through the process that council has not seen yet.

The provincial government ultimately has to grant final approval for cannabis retail stores permission to operate. The province has so far approved just 31 private stores across B.C. and is moving at a glacial pace; Summerland’s Green Gaia received local government approval in December but is still waiting for a licence.

Council will debate the matter Tuesday evening.
