YMCA Okanagan’s Cycle for Strong Kids event raised a whopping $91,000.

Hundreds of vulnerable children will be able to access healthy Y programs, thanks to the nearly 350 cyclists who took part in the May 26 outdoor spin class.

“We are blown away by the generosity of our community,” the Y’s Rhonda Zakala said. “The riders all had a blast at the event, but it pales in comparison to how much fun they’ve gifted back to local kids, granting them access to summer camps, after school programs, basketball, swim lessons and so many other vital programs many parents can’t afford on their own.”

With an estimated one in five children in the Central Okanagan living in poverty, many families are unable to enrol their kids in activities most take for granted.

The YMCA’s Strong Kids campaign allows the Y to offer financial assistance on child care, preschool, spring and summer camps, swim lessons, health memberships, and recreational and sport programs. Additional services are also offered completely free for high-risk children.
