Penticton city council has given preliminary approval for the rezoning for a corner property across from Penticton Regional Hospital.

Council heard Tuesday a proposal to turn 595 Carmi Ave. into a pharmacy. A staff report indicates the storefront last operated as a coffee and ice cream shop but now sits empty.

The plan will see the building upgraded significantly with façade improvements and parking added for nine vehicles. An existing driveway on Government Street will be closed for safety.

Council voted to send the proposal to a public hearing June 4.
