The public hearing for a condo development at the old cannery property in Summerland’s Lower Town takes place Tuesday.

The Lakeshore Drive development—anchored by two six-storey residential terraced towers featuring swimming pools on the patio of each unit—will be put before the public prior to being considered for final approval by council.

The project will also include a separate building fronting Lakeshore Drive that consists of 11-units of ground floor commercial and eight “resort condos” above.

As of Thursday afternoon, the city had received just pieces of correspondence on the development. One from a nearby resident that believes the condo towers are a tad too tall and another from the next-door Lakeshore Racquets Centre.

“As a not-for-profit society … operating on leased crown land, we have limited opportunity and funds to make property improvements and to sustain the increased usage of our lands that will result with a residential/resort built next door,” the Summerland Recreation Society said in a letter, suggesting having the developer pitch-in for improvements to their parking lot, landscaping, the shoreline or the facility as a whole.

Councillors have appeared impressed with the proposed development at previous meetings. The 24-units units in the terraced buildings will be between 1,650 and 1,800 sq. feet, with penthouses of 2,500 sq. feet.

The public hearing takes place on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in council chambers.
