Kelowna won’t be hosting the Canadian Culinary Championships next winter, but it will be getting the next best thing.

The Okanagan’s largest city will be hosting one of 12 regional legs of Canada’s Great Kitchen Party. The event will be held on Friday, Nov. 15, at the Delta Grand, and the winner will advance to the Canadian Culinary Championships in Ottawa next year.

Kelowna has hosted the national competition for the last nine years, but its contract expired after the event was held in February.

“We are thrilled with this announcement,” former Canadian Culinary Championships chair Judy Burns said in a press release. “Kelowna has been proud to stage the Canadian Culinary Championships in our city for the last nine years. Our community created an incredible event which was supported by so many, from the students at the Okanagan College to our B.C. wineries to our artisanal distillers, local breweries and so many who contributed to our silent and live auction.

“We were proud to host the competing chefs, judges and guests from across Canada. Now it’s our turn. This next evolution of the project now gives our local chefs, wineries, breweries and spirit providers the opportunity to compete on the national stage, which is all very exciting!”

Six chefs from the Okanagan Valley will go head-to-head in the Kelowna event, during which they will create a signature dish paired with a Canadian wine, beer, cider or spirit.

In the past, the Okanagan could send only two chefs to the B.C. regional event in Victoria—even though the Canadian championship was in Kelowna. Now the region is able to have more chefs compete for a spot in Ottawa.
