Do you want to be in pictures?
If so, Teresa May just might be the person who gets you on the silver screen.
The Kelowna resident has launched what she says is the Okanagan’s first talent agency. Teresa May Agency is hosting a meet and greet this Sunday, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Kelowna’s Kanata Hotel and Conference Centre for those interested in the film industry, which is experiencing a boom in the region.
May had always dabbled in the film industry as a background extra, and she was busy rounding up friends last fall when three movies being shot in and around Kelowna during a three-week span and there was a talent shortage. One of her friends asked her why she didn’t just do it for a living and make a little money on the side.
She did some investigating and learned there were 110 licensed B.C. talent agents, with 109 of them located in the Lower Mainland. The other is in Kamloops. So May quickly earned her licence, and now she is on the hunt for talent.
“We have such great talent here,” May said. “There’s so many talented people, even among my group of friends who are actors in the theatre world. It’s just so amazing.”
It is free to register a profile with May’s agency, although she recommends spending the money to get your headshot done properly.
“Upload a very good, clear headshot, because your headshot is the first look that any casting director or producer will see,” she said. “They look at the faces.”
Acting hopefuls are encouraged to fill out a casting information sheet on May’s website (teresamayagency.com) and to attend Sunday’s meet and greet at the Kanata. She believes a more organized talent pool will only help the film industry grow even more in the Okanagan.
“The only way to get anywhere,” she said, “is to collaborate and work together.”
