Staff with the District of Summerland is recommending council support the application of a cannabis retail storefront within the strip mall near the entrance of town.

The owners of Summerland Gold and Silver Exchange are proposing to open a cannabis storefront at 9-7519 Prairie Valley Rd. under the banner Green Gaia Cannabis Co.

A report going before council Monday states the school district and RCMP have not voiced any concerns about the application.

“The proposal is further than 50 walkable metres of any community/youth centres, libraries, schools, parks or playgrounds and the storefront is not highly visible from any of the adjacent highways,” development manager Kevin Taylor said.

The store would feature a public area of 234 square feet with operating hours of 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week, which is similar to the hours of the nearby liquor store.

If council approves the storefront on Monday it will be the first green-lit by a local government in the Okanagan. It’s unclear how long it would take the provincial government to grant final approval afterwards.
