Proponents of a cannabis retail store in Lake Country will get a second chance to plead their case before council.
Lake Country council voted 4-3, with Mayor James Baker casting the deciding vote, to turn down a variance application by the company to locate a retail cannabis store in the Turtle Bay Development.
The variance, which was supported by staff, would have located the store within a 400-metre buffer zone from a licensed daycare. The distance between the proposed store and the daycare is just 150 metres.
Baker said the applicants were in attendance at the Tuesday meeting and, while anyone in the gallery was given a chance to speak, they did not do so. He said they realized their error after the meeting and asked the mayor to consider bringing the item back for further discussion.
“I have the mayor’s prerogative to bring back anything for reconsideration within 30 days, so I’ve asked staff to get that together,” Baker said.
“They have to advertise again, and put the signs up again about the variance, and distribute letters to the people in the neighbourhood that it’s coming back.”
Baker said it will come back for consideration Dec. 18.
Earlier this year Lake Country passed a series of zoning bylaws allowing the establishment of cannabis storefronts within the Town Centre Commercial and Turtle Bay Crossing zones only.
