A Bernard Avenue building next to the Royal Ann Hotel will be coming down soon to make way for a new two-storey building.
Owners received approval from council to demolish the building, which previously housed Ichiban Sushi.
The restaurant is now closed.
A new two-storey building will be erected in its place. It will include a first-floor retail outlet plus a yoga studio and a single residential unit on the second floor.
While the building is not attached to those on either side, they do touch. Coun. Maxine DeHart expressed some concern about the demolition, asking how it might work.
“We have an official stamp of VC—very carefully,” player Terry Barton joked.
In a serious vein, Barton said downtown development does carry with it additional costs, “and this is a good example of how that is so.”
“When you have zero lot line setbacks, you have to respect the adjacent properties,” he said. “There are a number of additional construction measures they need to be able to go through.”
He cited other tricky downtown demolitions, including the Paramount redevelopment, and demolition of the building on the current Castanet site.
