The Kelowna Fire Department is expanding its regional fire dispatch service north.

The fire department has been awarded the contract to dispatch fire calls for the City of Vernon and the Okanagan Indian Band for the next five years.

The contract also includes a five-year renewal.

Fire Chief Travis Whiting says the contract will bring in revenues in excess of $200,000 a year.

Over the life of the contract, Vernon will pay $944,000 for the service, while the OKIB will pay nearly $78,000

“This revenue combined with revenue from customers such as Regional District of Central Kootenay and Kootenay Boundary, ensure we are able to provide good value without an escalation of costs,” Whiting told council Monday.

The Kelowna Fire Department first branched out into regional fire dispatch in 2011, when it won the bid to provide services to the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen.

It has since been awarded contracts for the Regional District of East Kootenay (2016) and the Regional Districts of Central Kootenay and Kootenay Boundary (2018).

Whiting expects dispatch to switch over to Kelowna sometime around the middle of October.
