He didn’t come home with the victory, but Kelowna filmmaker Stefan Matis was still thrilled with his trip last week to the International Motor Film Awards in London.

Matis’ production company, Plia Film Productions, was up for best documentary short at the awards, but two of the other five entries in the category tied for the top honour.

“We were in great company,” Matis said. “There was some amazing talent there, and it just validated us for sure. Maybe not this round, but next round we’ll get it. It was really good. We’re glad we went.”

Matis and Motor Werke owner Chris Germana collaborated on a documentary short called The Curators, which highlighted five Okanagan car enthusiasts and how the vehicles they love embody memories, nostalgia and eras gone by. It was up against documentaries from Nepal, China, Mexico and England.

The nomination and the trip to London was one of the top professional moments of Matis’ career, but he wants more of them.

“It’s definitely more about the journey than the outcome,” Matis said. “There’s a lot of work we have to do. This is just the beginning for us. We have a lot more of these to go to. That’s the goal, is to keep doing these to show that we are doing great work and that we’ll keep up the bar.”
