An inflatable waterpark planned on Osoyoos Lake likely won’t be popping up this year as was originally planned.

The Town of Osoyoos passed zoning on June 4 for Okanagan Wibit to set up just off the shore from Gyro Beach, but, two months later, the provincial government has not yet provided a lease which the company still needs.

The provincial body involved, FrontCounter BC, is busy dealing with flood-related issues from this year and last year, according to Gina MacKay, director of planning and developmental services in Osoyoos.

The holdup comes despite FrontCounter BC being said to have “prioritized the company’s application,” town staff said in June.

MacKay said at this point it’s unlikely the waterpark will be open this year.

“It is a big investment to install the park only to have to remove it within four to six weeks,” MacKay said. “It is more likely that they will wait until next year.”

The locally owned Okanagan Wibit already operates in Penticton, Peachland and Kelowna, as well as Barrie and Orillia, Ont.

The company first approached the Town of Osoyoos in 2016 looking to operate on the lake.
