A Summerland company with numerous hotels in Alberta and Saskatchewan now owns a major one on Kelowna’s busiest stretch of road.

Best Canadian Motor Inns purchased the former Holiday Inn Express and Conference Centre at the corner of Highway 97 and Banks Road. The property has been renamed Kanata Kelowna Hotel and Conference Centre.

The transaction took place on Monday, and new signage was on the building later that day.

“We’ve got the signs up, and we’re slowly changing things over,” general manager Bryan Burns said. “… The biggest thing is we are a Canadian franchise. We’re different than a lot of the branded hotels that are U.S. controlled or U.S. based.

“Our head office is actually based out of Summerland, so it’s close. We’re just looking forward to providing some great service and great room rates.”

BCMInns manages 14 hotel properties across B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan. The Kanata Kelowna is its second in B.C.; the other is in Invermere.

Holiday Inn Express and Suites built a new hotel at the corner of Highways 97 and 33, and Wyndham spent the last month managing their old location before BCMInns purchased it.

“It was just a great opportunity to come to the Okanagan,” Burns said. “… We are going to make some major investments in renovations, whether it’s the outside, the lobby and also guest rooms.”

There are 190 guest rooms in the hotel along with 4,500 square feet of conference space. Other amenities include two waterslides, a pool and free breakfast for guests.
