Wine awards pour into Penticton

The 18th annual National Wine Awards are in Penticton this week, with a record number of Canadian entries.

Co-head judge Anthony Gismodi says 1,867 wines are entered.

“It’s a record for us, the largest ever,” he said.

The first three days of the event involve 22 expert judges tasting all the wines in given categories.

This weekend, they will revisit the top wines, and determine platinum, gold, silver and bronze winners in more than 20 categories.

The wines are served blind, meaning the judges have no way of knowing who produced the wine they are tasting.

Gismodi said the event is a great showcase for Canadian wine.

“We love this event, it’s a snapshot of what’s going on in Canadian wine,” he said. “People … are thinking … it’s getting better and better every year. So it’s kind of nice to have them all in one place.”
