More than 6,000 people have registered for early-bird access to homes in one of Kelowna’s largest residential tower developments.

Units in the West Tower of the One Water Street development will go on sale this weekend and the developers say interest in the second tower is double what it was when East Tower units first went on sale.

Sitting atop what for a long time was an abandoned downtown Kelowna lot known as “the dirt pile,” One Water Street will see a pair of residential highrises—29 and 36 storeys high—built atop a three-storey podium.

That podium, which developers are calling “The Bench,” will house 1.3 acres of amenities, including a pair of swimming pools, a pickleball court, a dog park, and picnic areas.

Units in the East Tower are now largely sold out, but the 6,100 prospective buyers will get a first look at West Tower units May 25, ahead of the official start of sales May 26.

Leonard Kerkhoff, the vice-president of Kerkhoff Construction, one of the partners behind the project, says the West Tower floor plans have been adjusted based on feedback from the first round of sales of the East Tower.

Kerkhoff has said the plan is to have the first tower finished by 2020, and that construction is still “on track” to meet the timelines.

By the end of the year, he hopes to see the project “going vertical,” as construction on the tower proper begins.

He said if demand for One Water Street units keeps up, which it appears to have done, the developers will go straight into the construction of the second tower.

Previously, North American Development Group’s Russ Watson said the whole project could be completed in as few as four years.
