As contract negotiations continue between WestJet Airlines and pilots who’ve shown they’re willing to strike, Kelowna’s own discount airline has offered to take on skittish WestJet passengers itself.

Flair Airlines took to Twitter last week, referencing WestJet’s own discount carrier, Swoop Airlines, in a tweet that said Flair was “swooping in” to help flyers nervous about their trips with other companies.

Flair offered to match fares on its own flights for passengers who have been displaced from other airlines.

However, Flair’s own employees are also heading to the bargaining table after a strike vote.

In a recent news release, Unifor 2002 said its members at Flair Airlines voted overwhelmingly in favour of striking—if job action is necessary.

According to the union, 96 per cent of its members at Flair took part in the vote, and 98 per cent of those said yes.

“The members at Flair Airlines overwhelmingly support the bargaining committee and their efforts to obtain a fair and equitable first collective agreement,” said Euila Leonard, the president of Unifor Local 2002.

Unifor and Flair are scheduled to meet again for negotiations from June 5-8 in Kelowna, and the union says it’s “optimistic” the two sides can reach a “realistic” offer.

The union’s bargaining committee says it has “every intention to conclude the bargaining process whereby we reach a tentative agreement,” while Flair has said it’s committed to its employees and is also confident there will be an agreement.
