The original plan was for it to open last fall, but unexpected challenges forced the city to push back the opening date of the 29th Street parking lot for several months.

But city officials assure parking relief is at hand in the downtown core with the lot expected to be open by July.

Chris Ovens, with the city, said a partial July opening will allow for approximately 75 parking stalls, or 75 per cent of the lot capacity.

Ovens said the drainage work should be complete by the end of the week.

From there the city will backfill and pave the lot for the partial opening.

Only a portion of the lot will be open at first to allow city crews to add landscaping, do line painting and other amenities.

One of the problems that delayed opening the lot was the discovery of an old oil tank that used to contain heating oil.

Remediation had to be carried out on the site before work could continue.
