Update (April 9): Kelowna’s Mission Group expects to begin selling its latest downtown highrise vision later this summer.

Dubbed Brooklyn at Bernard Avenue, the proposed 25-story mixed-use retail, commercial and condo tower would sit on what is now a parking lot at St. Paul Street, behind the former Bargain Centre.

“Brooklyn at Bernard Block represents an opportunity for homebuyers to get in early on a high-rise master planned community right in the heart of Kelowna’s Bernard District,” says Randall Shier, president at Mission Group.

According to paperwork filed with the city’s planning department, the tower would include approximately 178 for-purchase units, including one-bedroom, one-bedroom and den, two bedroom and sub-penthouse suites.

The development has yet to land on city council’s desk, but if it’s approved it would be the first of three towers planned for the property.

Original Story: Mission Group has revealed preliminary details about its plans for the downtown Kelowna property that once housed the Bargain Shop.

The company this week began advertising a new condo development called Brooklyn, and have already begun turning the Bernard Avenue property into a sales centre for the project.

Mission Group has not yet responded to requests for more information about the project, but an early-registration website says it will be a concrete highrise featuring condos selling in the $300,000 range.

The website says the building will feature “Brooklyn-inspired architecture,” with condos zoned to allow short-term rentals.

Mission Group bought the property last fall, after it had sat empty since the Bargain Shop closed its doors in 2010.

The 1.5-acre site sits at 560 Bernard Ave., and is made up of six properties stretching along an entire city block. Prior to its sale, HM Commercial group listed the property, pegging its value at $9.4 million and advertising it as the potential site of a 26-storey highrise.

At the time of the purchase, Mission Group’s Luke Turri said the company saw a unique opportunity in the property.

“We are excited to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to invest in Kelowna’s dynamic downtown community and to further our commitment to Kelowna,” Turri said.

When the property first went up for sale, city planner Ryan Smith said it was one of the “key sites” in downtown Kelowna.

“The Safeway site is a very key site at that end of Bernard, and we think of this as the other key site,” said Smith.

Smith said the city hoped whoever bought the former Bargain Shop property would turn into a mixed-use development.

Mission Group is advertising condos in Brooklyn “coming summer 2018.”
