Winfield pot plant upgrade

A multi-million-dollar renovation is now underway at a Winfield building that will almost certainly house a cannabis grow operation.

The property is located just east of Kangaroo Creek Farm, at 9590 McCarthy Rd., and technically sits within the boundaries of the City of Kelowna.

The property contains a large warehouse, which is the former home of Falcon Aluminum Extrusions Inc.

Late last month the city approved a building permit for an industrial renovation on the property. The permit pegs the cost of the reno at $5 million, and says it will be taken on by Maddocks Construction Ltd., whose principal, Craig Main, is associated with cannabis company The Flowr Corporation.

Not long ago, Flowr took over Kelowna’s Cannatech Plant Systems Inc., which was granted a license to grow medical marijuana in December.

At the time the license was granted, Flowr’s CEO told Okanagan Edge the company plans to locate its “flagship operation” in Kelowna and will eventually establish a “massive presence” in the city.

“We have very, very big plans to expand our capacity in Kelowna, whereby we’ve already acquired other properties to expand at a number of new facilities over the next 12-18 months,” Tony Giorgi said.

He said Flowr’s expansion plans include “many hundreds of thousands of square feet” of production space, which will mean work for several hundred people.

Flowr has yet to officially respond to requests for more information about the McCurdy Road renovation, and has not explicitly confirmed it is involved.
