Big White is coming off of its busiest Christmas season ever.

Two huge events contributed to record-breaking numbers on the ski hill. Those were Cruz the Blues, with 1,567 participants, and the Canadian Olympic team send-off.

The Olympic event was the largest in Big White history, with more than 6,000 people in the village.

New flights from Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne, Australia, to Vancouver and Kelowna also contributed to increased numbers. The resort welcomed 495 more Australian guests this year than during last year’s holiday period.

“Skier visits were up 4.1 per cent, while food and beverage numbers were up 12.8 per cent over this traditional busy period,” says Trevor Hanna, the resort’s vice-president of hospitality.

Big White’s airport shuttle handled 4,385 transfers, and the mountain’s ski school taught more than 7,000 kids – 1,104 of those first-timers – over the holidays.

The resort employs more than 1,090 full-time team members during the winter season.
