Is B.C.’s NDP government backing away from a campaign promise to freeze BC Hydro rates?
Premier John Horgan says a blanket freeze may not be the best route.
The party promised a rate freeze during the provincial election campaign, but on Tuesday Horgan said: “I am now more convinced than ever that a better course of action on affordability is not a blanket reduction or freezes, but targeted to those who can best benefit from relief in this area.”
Rates have more than 24 per cent over the past four years.
Targeted incentives and means testing are part of ongoing conversations, Horgan told CTV.
Just two months ago, Energy Minister Michelle Mungall instructed BC Hydro to ask the B.C. Utilities Commission to pull back on a planned three per cent rate increase this year.
That freeze would come into effect April, if it is approved.
