Opponents of a brewpub planned for Vancouver’s iconic Stanley Park say the project will ruin the park’s atmosphere and pose a threat to herons nesting in the area.

A petition opposing the development has more than 1,100 signatures.

“There’ll be more people … spilling out into the park, right underneath the heron colony and also the residences that are there, so the noise in the evening is a totally new experience for the herons,” says Maria Morlin of the group Stanley Park Advocates.

“This was done without any public consultation, and without commissioning any studies on traffic, noise, or the environment, despite the fact that the blue herons, which are a protected species, have their colony not 30 metres away,” the group’s petition claims.

Stanley Park Brewing is in the process of renovating and moving into a heritage building on Stanley Park Drive which previously housed a restaurant.

Parks board documents show it would feature an 82-seat tasting room, 68-seat outdoor deck, and a 40-seat patio.

The company is seeking an additional liquor license for the new site.

City staff are proposing a six-month probationary period for the license.
