A private Kelowna college is branching out, after opening a second campus in Surrey.
Focus College has been operating since 1992, specializing in business and information technology programs.
The expansion is the second major milestone for the college in 2017, after it received a significant international designation earlier this year.
In April, Focus became the first institution in Canada to be granted Approved Centre status through the Scottish Qualifications Authority–a designation that allows it to offer a special qualification accepted across Europe.
Focus representative Angie Clowry says the two announcements have made 2017 one of the most exciting years for the college.
“We have a determined president, and also a business partner who has hopped on board, and I guess it’s just perfect timing that it’s happened,” she said.
Focus’ new Burnaby campus officially opened Nov. 1, and as of January 2018 students will have the opportunity to start studying there.
The Surrey campus will offer the same courses as the Kelowna one, and be run by Baljit Dhaliwal, a campus director the college calls “fantastic.”
Clowry says the college isn’t sure yet exactly how many students will enrol at the Surrey campus, but that they’re “hoping for full courses.”
Today, Focus is holding an open house at its Kelowna campus, where it will talk about its history and its plans for the future. Anyone from the community is invited. The open house runs from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., at its Dolphin Avenue location.
