It may be drizzling rain in Kelowna, and thermometers may be struggling to break 5°C, but one local golf course isn’t quite ready to call it quits.

Shadow Ridge Golf Club reopened today, offering $25 tee times on a first come, first served, basis.

The course had previously shut up shop, after snow blanketed the valley earlier this month.

But with bare ground visible once again, general manager James Presnail thought he would give hardcore golfers a chance to get in one more round before winter officially sets in.

“We had a tough year. With the flooding in the spring, we were on of those courses that flooded,” Presnail said, referring to the near-record flood that swept through the Okanagan in the spring. “We just thought we owe it to our members to be open as long as we can.”

Even today, flood recovery is still underway at the course, and six of its holes remain closed as the club regrows grass.

Nevertheless, Presnail says about 20 people have hit the links so far today, both club members and those shelling out green fees.

The city of Kelowna bought Shadow Ridge last year, and plans to eventually use the land it sits on to expand the Kelowna International Airport.

Until then, however, Monaghan Golf Group is managing day-to-day operations at the course. Presnail noted that he just took over management of the course at the beginning of the season, and that “we kind of got hammered for our first year of operation.”

Next year, Presnail said Shadow Ridge will have the “best membership deal in the Okanagan,” and said he is anticipating a great season.

Until then, he plans to keep the course open until the next big snowfall.
