Downtown Vancouver businesses are calling for later SkyTrain hours on weekends.

Late-night runs on Fridays and Saturdays would be an economic boost, says Charles Gauthier, president of the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association.

“You can’t look at this from the perspective that it’s just going to help the bars and nightclubs,” Gauthier told CTV. “It could help the restaurants; it could certainly encourage people to stay later downtown after they go to a hockey game.”

TransLink said last week it’s possible to keep the trains running later with the right resources, despite earlier pronouncements it would be impossible because of essential overnight track maintenance.

“I’m still gobsmacked about hearing that,” Gauthier said.

Keeping SkyTrain open later could also improve safety on the Granville Strip after bars close for the night, he added.
