He's Got the Edge
A light-hearted Q&A with the people who make the Okanagan work

Fred Harbinson
Okanagan Edge Staff - Nov 17, 2017 - Got the Edge

Name: Fred Harbinson

What business or organization are you involved with?
Penticton Vees.

What is your role with that organization?
President/general manager/head coach.

What’s your favorite thing about living in the Okanagan?
My favorite aspect about living in the Okanagan is the great weather and friendly community feel.

If you could have lunch with anyone in the world, who would you choose and why?
I would love the opportunity to have lunch with my Nonno, who passed away a week before I was born. I would enjoy to just see what he was really like as a man and a father.

What’s your go-to happy place?
My home theater room, where I enjoy watching movies with my family.

What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the culture I have helped create surrounding our program. The Vees “brand” is now recognized as the top Junior A team in terms of player development in Canada. The overall professional culture has provided a consistent reload when it comes to the ability
to be one of the top teams in the BCHL – in regards to wins and championships – in spite of having the highest player turnover year after year in Junior hockey.

What are the top three things on your bucket list?
I am more of a short-term goal person but as far as a bucket list I would value the following:
1) See both of my kids graduate from university;
2) Attend both of my children’s weddings;
3) Bring another championship to Penticton

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?
I love food and I am not even close to a picky eater but I have absolutely no interest in eating something “weird”.

Latest movie or book: The book – Pat Riley The Winner Within – A Life for Team Players. A great book by a legendary basketball coach, who talks in length about some of the adverse effects of success and when to expect them.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
As for a physical gift I would say my first pair of Guy Lafleur hockey
skates for Christmas when I was five. As for emotional gift I have received countless letters and text messages from former players on how I have positively influenced their lives.

If today were your last day, how would you spend it?
I would want to hang out with as many of my family members and friends telling old stories probably at a hockey rink.
