Electors in Penticton gave the green light for expanding Penticton’s southeast boundary near Skaha Lake, which would eventually lead to about 180 new residences being built and an extension to Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park.

Residents had a window of nearly two months to submit a petition against the development if they were opposed to it.

City staff also hosted four public open houses leading up to the petition deadline.

The deadline for a petition ended on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Had 10 per cent of the electoral population filed a petition, a public referendum would’ve been needed for the boundary extension.

Only 382 residents, or 1.4 per cent of electors in Penticton, submitted a petition against the plans.

The next step is for staff to get the green light from council members for the boundary extension, which they hope can happen on Nov. 21 according to a news release.

The provincial government would give the final stamp of approval for the land annexation.

On the 300-acre parcel of land, a developer is proposing to build about 180 new homes on half of that land, and gift the other 150 acres to B.C. Parks to expand Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park.
